I LOVE reading! I read some as a kid and really ramped up reading novels once I hit pre-teen / teenage years (think R.L Stine “Fear Street” series). As I’ve gotten older, pushed through graduate/medical school, got married, had children and cats, etc… life got in the way and I rarely have time to sit down and read a book. When I do get a chance to sit I pick up the crochet needle and some yarn. Enter Audible. Gamechanger! It took me a while to accept the change from the smell of a new book and paper cuts as proof of my voracious reading to letting someone else imagine a book for me. I will say that the change was jarring initially because I was used to creating my own voices and images of a character. When someone else is narrating a book, you automatically assign physical characteristics of the characters to what you hear in the narrator’s voice. A woman with a whiny voice leads to the image of a weak protagonist even if she isn’t written that way. Authors…choose your narrators wisely! There have been several series that I think I might like but can’t stand the narrator and don’t have time to sit down to read them.

Anyway, being able to listen to my novels while I’m crocheting gives me the chance to do two of my favorite things at once. Much better than listening to a novel when I’m supposed to be working (heh heh heh). I hope to be able to give you some solid audiobook reviews and to give you an idea of how much they will allow you to concentrate on your crochet (or other needlework) while listening. My favorite genres are YA, dystopian, sci-fi, and fantasy. While audible was offering its romance packages I got a little hooked on those, but I’m trying to wean myself from them. I typically won’t review romance novels because the contemporary ones are basically the same story with different characters. I will make an exception if I come across one that I really love! Feel free to make recommendations for books to review and I’ll do my best to have a listen.
